MSC containership grounded at Italy's largets port
“MSC Elaine” blocks harbour traffic after losing control at the Port of Gioia Tauro
MSC's 8,562 TEU container ship MSC Elaine lost control yesterday, 9 January, at the entrance of Italy's largest port and ran onto the southern breakwater tip. Attempts to dislodge the ship did not succeed yet, and the vessel remains grounded.
The incident blocked traffic movement at the country's main maritime gateway and access to the Gioia Tauro has been severely affected.
No news of damages to the ship was reported after an initial inspection was conducted at the port. Authorities launched an investigation to discover the reasons for the accident, with the most likely scenario being a technical malfunction.
MSC Elaine is a 339-meter-long containership carrying the flag of Panama and was heading to Marsaxlokk, Malta, when the accident occurred.
