Italian port to reopen after grounded boxship is refloated
Port of Gioia Tauro was closed to traffic following incident on January 9
10 January 2023 (Lloyd's List) - ITALY’s leading transhipment port is expected to resume operations after being forced to close following the grounding of a containership.
The Panama-flagged MSC Elaine (IMO: 9393321) ran aground during its departure from port of Gioia Tauroon January 9.
The 8,500 teu capacity ship, travelling to Marsaxlokk, Malta, reported loss of control at the entrance of the port and ran aground around 0900 hrs local time, according to a Lloyd’s List Intelligence casualty report.
No vessels have arrived or departed the port for more than 24 hours, according to vessel-tracking data.
A spokesperson for the port authority of the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea told Lloyd’s List that the ship has been freed and operations are expected to resume shortly.
Containership calls to Gioia Tauro totalled 1,235 last year, according to Lloyd's List Intelligence vessel-tracking data.
