Maersk's lawsuit against Evergreen claims losses caused by Suez Canal blocking
The grounding of mega container ship ‘Ever Given’ caused major disruption for six days in March 2021
Danish carrier Maersk has filed a lawsuit against Evergreen regarding losses caused by the grounding of its container ship ‘Ever Given’ in the Suez Canal in March 2021.
Maersk raised the claim at the Danish Maritime and Commercial High Court against the Taiwanese carrier, which was the ship’s operator at the time of the incident.
A Maersk spokesperson told Lloyd’s List that the lawsuit’s co-defendants are Ever Given’s owner and technical manager but did not provide a name.
The grounding of the 20,000 TEU container vessel ‘Ever Given’ caused major disruption and hindered the passage of a large number of ships for six days. According to Shipping Watch, around 50 of Maersk’s ships were severely delayed in the aftermath of the incident.
While the news about the lawsuit has emerged recently, Shipping Watch claims that the case has been underway for some time. The proceedings are, however, facing challenges because the companies sued are registered outside Europe in Taiwan, Japan and Hong Kong.
Maersk has not yet published news about the claim, but local news reported that the company is seeking around $45m in compensation from Evergreen.
