ZIM, Maersk divert vessels amidst Middle East instability

The two carriers anticipate delays and longer transit times in favour of maintaining safety of vessels, crew and cargo

In an announcement published yesterday, Israeli carrier ZIM informed customers that it will change the route of ships on its ZIM Mediterranean Premium Service (ZMP) service as a precautionary measure in light of the situation in the Red Sea.

The advisory mentioned that the carrier will take "temporary proactive measures to ensure the safety of its crews, vessels, and customers' cargo."

As a result, longer transit times in the ZMP service are anticipated.

Earlier, the carrier had also announced applying a War Risk Premium (WRP) surcharge for cargo to/from Israel.

"Considering the ongoing war situation, as well as the additional war risk insurance premium insurers imposed on all vessels calling Israeli ports, ZIM is obligated to continue paying this premium to maintain service to and from Israel," said ZIM.

Similarly, Maersk announced it is taking similar steps for two of its vessels. Maersk's advisory today mentioned it will divert containerships Lisa and Maersk Pangani.

  • Lisa: will be diverted to Salalah, coming from India and later proceed to the Far East.
  • Maersk Pangani: will move to Mundra after calling Cape Town, skipping Jebel Ali Port, and later exchanging positions with Maersk IYO.

Maersk anticipates a delay exceeding one week from the initial delivery schedule for the two vessels.

These measures come after three attacks were launched last week against vessels near the Red Sea, one involving a CMA CGM containership.
