Maersk tops green lobby report card, Evergreen and Hapag-Lloyd get F rating

Ship It Zero group awarded points for emissions cuts and green fuel contracts, but penalised carriers for using LNG and scrubbers

3 August 2023 (Lloyd's List) - AP Moller-Maersk topped a green lobby ranking of 10 container lines’ green pledges while rivals Evergreen and Hapag-Lloyd were given an F rating.

A Ship It Zero report on Thursday graded retailers and carriers based on their public statements and corporate social governance reports.

Maersk’s B rating was the highest of the carriers. Ocean Network Express and HMM were given C overall, while Mediterranean Shipping Co, Cosco, CMA CGM were given Ds.

Hapag-Lloyd, Evergreen, Yang Ming and PIL were given the lowest F rating.

“Most carriers have only committed to carbon neutrality by 2050, too long a time frame to avoid catastrophe, and carriers are reliant on false solutions like liquefied natural gas (LNG) and scrubbers,” the green group said.

“While development of alternative low-emission fuels is increasing, far more is needed to replace new dirty ships on the global orderbook.”

The report, which also took aim at retailers such as Walmart and Amazon, reviewed press releases and corporate disclosures to award the grades.
