French carrier CMA CGM has been taking major steps to realise its sustainability goals. According to a report by Shipping Watch, the company has surpassed the second-largest carrier in the world, Maersk, in terms of methanol-powered box vessels.
The large order placed by the French carrier increased its orderbook after it commissioned six methanol ships of 16,000 TEU, says the report. The new order was valued at nearly USD 1bn, and deliveries are expected in 2025 and 2026.
This is not the first order of methanol vessels by the carrier. Shipping Watch added that CMA CGM had earlier ordered 12 methanol-powered ships at South Korean yard Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries.
With the two orders, the company’s orderbook would surpass that of Maersk’s, reaching 336,000 TEU, says the report. The financial report issued by the carrier this month highlighted the major investment the group allocated to decarbonise its business.
“Almost 90% of the year’s profits are being reinvested to share the created value with our employees, support French companies and to accelerate the energy transition,” announced the report. CMA CGM has noted that it is committed to achieving net zero carbon by 2050, and “it has reduced carbon emissions per container carried by 50% since 2008.”
