HAPAG-LLOYD subsidiary Hanseatic Global Terminals has formed a joint venture with Brazilian conglomerate Imetame Group to develop a greenfield container terminal in Brazil.
HGT and Imetame will each have a 50% stake in the JV Imetame Logistica Porto. The JV will focus on container terminal operations.
The terminal will be in Aracruz, in the state of Espírito Santo, and will have a capacity of 1.2m teu. Operations are expected to begin in 2028. ILP will develop and operate the new Hanseatic Global Terminals Aracruz.
The terminal will have 750 metres of quay length and a water depth of 17 meters, allowing large ships to dock.
“This investment in the port of Aracruz benefits Brazil by strengthening trade infrastructure via a port closer to consumer markets and key global shipping routes than traditional gateway ports – thereby providing several cargo-originating states an alternative and more efficient access to global markets,” said Dheeraj Bhatia, chief executive of Hanseatic Global Terminals.
Brazil’s busiest port is the port of Santos in the state of São Paulo. It is around 1,000km away from the port of Aracruz.
Aracruz is home to major industries in Brazil. Evonik operates a hydrogen peroxide plant there.
The world’s largest tissue paper manufacturer, Suzano, opened a new tissue paper mill in Aracruz this year. The plant can manufacture 34,000 tonnes of toilet paper per year.
On the shipping front, Seatrium owns a shipyard in Aracruz. Estaleiro Jurong Aracruz sits on an 82.5-hectare site and began operations in 2014. The yard is focused on ship repairs.
“Hanseatic Global Terminals possesses great expertise to offer the new terminal's customers, importers and exporters efficient cargo handling and further strengthen Brazil's importance in global trade,” said Imetame Group chairman Etore Cavallieri.
Brazil has caught the attention of port operators this year, with others looking to increase their presence in the country.
Philippine-headquartered International Container Terminal Services Inc last week invested $172m into expanding and modernising the Rio Brasil Terminal at the port of Rio de Janeiro.
