APM Terminals has today inaugurated its new terminal at the Brazilian port of Suape, which will be the first fully electrified facility in Latin America upon commencing operations.
Constructed at a cost of $350m, APMT Suape will increase the total container handling capacity at the Brazilian port by 55%, APMT said.
The terminal will boast an initial annual handling capacity of 400,000 teu.
Brazilian vice-president Geraldo Alckmin said the new terminal was a “leap forward” for infrastructure in the northeastern state of Pernambuco, “and for Brazil’s competitiveness”.
“It means reduced costs, greater integration with the world, more opportunities for agribusiness and industry, and increased job creation,” he said.
Suape Port chief executive Armando Monteiro Bisneto said the new terminal “expands our operational capacity, strengthens Pernambuco’s connection to the world’s leading markets, and sends a clear message to the world: Pernambuco is ready to welcome major investments and lead a new cycle of sustainable growth, innovation, and competitiveness”.
APM Terminals’ move into Suape marks the Maersk group’s second terminal investment in Brazil, complementing its 30% stake in Porto Itapoá, located on the north coast of Santa Catarina.
