Today, 10 March 2025, the German trade union Ver.di started a second wave of full-day warning strikes by public sector workers.
While airport operations across Germany are the most affected, the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) also called members to join the strike.
The HPA is, among other things, in charge of the landside and waterside infrastructure as the port authority, which could impact pilot transfer services in charge of vessel traffic.
The exact impact remains unknown; however, all forms of transportation are subject to delays and interruptions.
The strike is planned for 24 hours today unless the union decides to extend the labour action.
Rail transport at the Port of Hamburg has been facing severe delays in the past few weeks.
Container Terminals Burchardkai is experiencing considerable delays in processing rail orders. The backlog is currently around 1.5 days, which is causing significant disruption to the train network.
Yard utilisation was 75% last week. Automation groundwork at CTB will begin this week, which could further delay vessels calling the terminal.
The berthing line at Container Terminal Altenwerder was also full last week, with yard utilisation at 65%.
Furthermore, the planned strike will impact vessel traffic on the Kiel-Canal until Thursday, 13 March.
Inbound traffic into the Kiel Canal will be stopped during this period.
