Extreme weather disrupts operations at European ports

Ports of Felixstowe, Liverpool and Rotterdam warned of interruption to operations in the next few days

UK ports expect three days of high winds from Monday, 22 January, until Thursday, 25 January.

Felixstowe Port advised yesterday that wind speeds could exceed safe working thresholds starting Sunday, 21 January. As a result, container handling and trucking gates at the port are likely to be suspended.

Similarly, The Port of Liverpool issued a weather warning saying it forecasts severe winds to impact port operations throughout the said period. Partial to full work stoppages are to be expected.

Several North European countries have experienced continued snowfall and strong winds this month.

Netherland's Rotterdam World Gateway terminal announced a shutdown of operational services on Sunday, 21 January 2024, from 4:00 pm until Monday, 22 January, 12:00 pm.

In Germany, snowfall and fluctuating temperatures have caused the formation of black ice on main roads.

The latest Kuehne+Nagel advisory (German) warns of significant restrictions to traffic, causing transport delays, especially in the eastern parts of the country.

Please note that the operational status of container ports in Europe is continually adapted as weather conditions change.
