Australia issues updated Brown Marmorated Stink Bug measures for the 2026/27 season

New treatment options introduced while several compliance programs are withdrawn

Australia issues updated Brown Marmorated Stink Bug measures for the 2026/27 season

Australia's Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) has announced the seasonal measures for the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB) 2026/27 season, applying to certain goods manufactured in or shipped from target risk countries between 1 September 2026 and 30 April 2027.

While the list of target risk countries remains unchanged, DAFF has introduced several operational changes.

The most significant update is the introduction of Ethyl Formate as an approved onshore treatment option, providing additional flexibility for cargo requiring BMSB treatment. Previously, this treatment methodology was only available offshore.

Another important change is the removal of the Rolled Goods Policy. Breakbulk cargo must now be loaded within 120 hours of treatment, with the previous additional 48-hour allowance for rolled cargo no longer available. This may require tighter planning and coordination for affected shipments.

DAFF has also discontinued the Safeguarding Arrangement Scheme. Existing approvals issued during the previous season are no longer valid, and no new applications will be accepted for the 2026/27 season.

Japan, the Republic of Korea, China and the United Kingdom continue to be classified as emerging risk countries, resulting in increased random inspections of certain cargo.

The BMSB measures continue to apply to targeted high-risk goods and to target-risk goods shipped in containers, LCL consignments, and certain breakbulk cargoes.

The brown marmorated stink bug is dangerous because it is an invasive pest that can cause serious damage to fruit, vegetables, crops and ornamental plants. It can also spread internationally by hiding in cargo, containers and vehicles, creating risks for agriculture, biodiversity and trade.

Importers are encouraged to review the latest DAFF guidance and ensure treatment arrangements and documentation are compliant before cargo is shipped.
