Aerial attack causes damage to a Hapag-Lloyd boxship

The carrier confirmed that 15,000 TEU Al Jasrah was attacked near Yemen. An update revealed that ship MSC Alanya was target of another attack, but it managed to take evasive measures.

News reports came in this morning about a new attack in the Red Sea against Hapag-Lloyd's containership, Al Jasrah.

While crossing the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the vessel sustained damages, causing a fire on the deck and a container to fall overboard, reports Reuters.

German carrier Hapag-Lloyd confirmed the news to Shipping Watch, saying, "We confirm that our 15,000 TEU ship Al Jasrah, which operates on the MD2 service, was attacked today while sailing close to the coast of Yemen.

The carrier added that no crew members were injured by the accident, assuring it would take precautionary steps to ensure their safety.

One of the updates by the United Kingdome Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that "a vessel has been impacted by an unknown object which has resulted in a fire on board."

Reuters further reported on another incident involving MSC Alanya. The vessel was ordered to alter course towards Yemen but it managed to take evasive measures.

The new incidents occurred less than 24 hours after a similar attack against the containership Maersk Gibraltar.
