French establishment Windcoop is launching the construction of the world's first cooperatively financed sailing container ship.

According to a press release, this vessel is owned by a diverse group of members, including citizens, shippers, businesses, and local authorities, who collectively raised €6.8 million in equity.

The total construction cost is estimated at €28.5 million.

Windcoop's container ships are primarily powered by wind energy, which is inexhaustible, clean, and free.

These vessels represent a significant step towards reducing pollution in maritime transport.

Construction of the first sailing cargo ship is set to begin in 2025. The ship will be owned by a community of shipowners committed to accelerating the transition in maritime transport.

The ship will accommodate 12 passengers, allowing them to live alongside the crew.

Windcoop seeks to adapt sail propulsion to this type of freight. The vessel is optimised for sailing upwind, aiming for an average speed of 9 knots, with the potential for acceleration in favourable winds.

Windcoop claims that, depending on the route and season, the cargo ship can save up to 90% of its fuel by sailing.
