Monsoon rain disrupts port and CFS operations in Bangladesh

Congestion and delays relate to flooding, labour shortages and high pre-holiday volumes

by Priya Radünzel, SeaNewsEditor

Update: 03.06.2025

Due to ongoing heavy monsoon rainfall across Bangladesh, particularly in the Chittagong (Chattogram) region, logistics operations are currently impacted.

Waterlogging and flooding have disrupted container yard access, delayed cargo handling, and reduced labour availability.

These conditions are affecting both port and CFS operations, potentially altering planned schedules, especially during the high-volume Eid period.

Kuehne+Nagel sources report that vessel waiting times have risen to 5-6 days on average.

In addition, Seaexplorer currently shows a queue of 13 vessels at anchor.

The disruptions could worsen as port operations will be halted in Chittagong from 20:00 on 6 June to 09:00, 8 June for Eid celebrations.

On the other hand, factories and offices will have an extended public holiday from 5 to 14 June.

Kuehne+Nagel monitors the situation closely. For the latest update, please refer to our advisory or reach out to your local Kuehne+Nagel representative.

On 29 May 2025, a deep depression over the Northwest Bay made landfall between Sagar Island (India) and Khepupara (Bangladesh) and has since been gradually weakening. However, adverse weather conditions continue to affect operations across coastal regions.

Kuehne+Nagel reports that gusty winds of up to 60 km/h and moderate sea conditions are impacting maritime ports, the North Bay, and surrounding coastal areas. Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 remains in effect at Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra ports.

Furthermore, heavy rainfall and flooding have caused waterlogging in Chattogram City and port areas, disrupting container yard operations.

Cargo handling, shipment receiving, and loading/unloading activities are experiencing significant delays.

Labour availability is limited, and port and transport movement is significantly restricted. As a result of these ongoing disruptions, planned schedules may be subject to change.
