U.S. delays furniture tariff hikes and softens pasta duties

Planned increases on wood-based imports pushed to 2027, while steep anti-dumping tariffs on Italian pasta are rolled back

U.S. delays furniture tariff hikes and softens pasta duties

The Trump administration has postponed planned tariff increases on upholstered furniture, kitchen cabinets, and bathroom vanities, echoing an earlier delay on food and agriculture imports.

Duties on wood‑dependent products were set to rise from 25% to 30–50% on 1 January, but these increases are now deferred until 1 January 2027, following “productive negotiations” on trade reciprocity and national security.

While the pause offers short‑term relief to importers, it prolongs uncertainty for manufacturers and retailers planning around future pricing and supply chains.

Industry groups warn that the extended ambiguity continues to pressure the homebuilding sector. The National Association of Home Builders reiterated its call for exemptions on building materials.

Raise construction costs, impede supply chains and place upward pressure on home prices.

As stakeholders await clarity, the pause temporarily stabilises costs but leaves long‑term tariff impacts unresolved.

White House reverses tariffs on Italian pasta

Simultaneously, the White House reversed its stance on proposed anti-dumping tariffs targeting Italian pasta imports after several months of negotiations with Italian government officials and producers.

Initially, the U.S. Department of Commerce proposed duties exceeding 90% on select Italian pasta products as part of an anti-dumping investigation, in addition to existing tariffs on European goods.

These provisional tariff rates were subsequently reduced significantly overnight. According to Italy’s national statistics agency, as reported by Reuters, Italian pasta exports to the United States are valued at approximately $800 million annually.
