18 July (Lloyd's List) - TÜRKİYE will start taxing shipping emissions using prices from the EU Emissions Trading System, while the start date of the Turkish ETS will be announced in the next six months along with the other guidelines.
Type and size of the vessels that will pay carbon tax will be announced with a presidential decree along with other guidelines such as the voyages that will be included, according to the Turkish Official Gazette.
The Turkish Chamber of Shipping expects the necessary details to be announced in the next six months.
It was not clear whether vessels would start reporting emissions from voyages including Turkish ports before the implementation of an ETS, as there is currently no legislation that requires such reporting unlike the EU.
Container transhipment at Turkish ports has risen sharply so far in 2024, although none of the Turkish ports fit the EU’s criteria for neighbouring transhipment hubs that would be considered as part of the bloc’s ETS.
The EU is Türkiye’s biggest trading partner.
