Top five Chinese ports in 2022

Despite being China's busiest port, Shanghai registered the lowest year-on-year growth at 0.6%

Last year’s container volumes at Chinese ports revealed that Shanghai Port is still the busiest port in China, as it handled nearly 47m TEU in 2022. While the port handled the biggest volumes compared to other ports, it had the lowest year-on-year growth at only 0.6%. In September 2022, Shanghai Port announced plans to extend Yangshan Deepwater Port by adding a container terminal for feeder and shortsea services. The $7-billion project will construct seven 70,000-tonne class berths and fifteen 20,000-tonne class berths, with operations expected to begin in 2030. According to statistics, several ports advanced their position in the top-10 list for 2022. The port that advanced the most was the Port of Dalian, which achieved a significant 21% growth compared to last year. China’s second busiest port was the Port of Ningbo-Zhoushan in East China. The port handled more than 3m TEU in January of this year alone. Experts attribute the achievements of Ningbo-Zhoushan to the efforts port operators made to expand business domestically and overseas, which allowed it to handle over 33m TEU last year. Third and fourth places were held by Shenzhen Port with 30m TEU and Qingdao Port with 25.7m TEU. Port of Guangzhou handled 24.60m and was ranked fifth place on the list. The Port of Yingkou was the only Chinese port to decrease its container throughput in 2022, according to Port Technology. The port handled 5m TEU, which reflects a 4% decrease from 2021.
