Update: Vessel operations to recommence at APM Terminals Pipavav on 8 June after a power failure

Waterside operations will be sustained using an alternate power source until the port is back on the grid

Update: 05.06.2023

Kuehne+Nagel has been informed that port operations will commence from 06:00 on 8 June using an alternative power source for the cranes. The alternative source is said to be adequate for day-to-day stevedoring and yard operation until the port is back on the main power grid.

On 30 May, a power failure impacted port operations, closing the container berth at APM Terminals Pipavav. The port was able to maintain gate and rail operations and supply power to reefers using its captive power plant and DG sets.

As per a Maersk advisory, there were 717 containers held at the port at the time of the power outage. Maersk stated some of its vessels would omit Pipavav and call Mundra instead. Pipavav cargo will be trucked or railed to Mundra. Delays to cargo are to be expected until full operations begin at APM Terminals Pipavav.

APM Terminals Pipavav (APMT) has suffered a power failure after strong winds uprooted power transmission towers outside the port area on 29 May. This has resulted in a disruption of the grid power supply to the north Indian port. There was no reported Infrastructure damage at the port.

The power supply company, Gujarat Electricity Transmission Company Limited (GETCO) expects to a complete restoration of the power grid supply to take a week.

In the meantime, the APM Terminals Pipavav says it has commenced partial operations through its captive power plant and the DG sets.

All waterside operation has completely ceased in Pipavav; however, rail and gate operations continue. A backup power supply to the reefer cargo is being maintained, reported APMT.

"Owing to the current situation, the container berth will remain non-operational till 2359 hours of 5th June 2023. The port may handle the container vessel earliest by 6th June 2023 subject to regularizing power supply, "advised APMT.

APM Terminals Pipavav lies in the northwestern state of Gujerat, with immediate access to the largest seafood export belt in India via road and rail. It recently celebrated its ranking as India’s most efficient port for the second consecutive year in the Global Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2022 rankings published by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence.
