2 September 2025 (Lloyd's List) - TAIWAN’s Interasia Lines has confirmed that it has signed shipbuilding contracts with a Chinese shipyard for up to eight feedermax containerships.

The Taipei-headquartered container line operator has contracted six firm 2,900 teu vessels from Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding (YZJ) for delivery in 2028.

Interasia Lines holds options for an additional two ships. The newbuilding contract is Interasia’s first with the Chinese shipbuilder.

“This agreement marks Interasia’s first shipbuilding collaboration with YZJ, a significant milestone in the company’s fleet expansion strategy, and is a strong reflection of Interasia’s ambition to strengthen its position in the Intra-Asia market and beyond,” said Interasia Lines.

Interasia, which is affiliated to the world’s 11th largest carrier Wan Hai Lines, operates a fleet of 27 containerships in the intra-Asia, Asia-east Africa and Asia-Indian sub-continent trades.

The company previously utilised secondhand tonnage, but signed its first newbuilding order in 2022 with Japan Marine United for six 3,055 teu vessels.

The lead vessel in the series, Interasia Transform (IMO: 9993846), was delivered in August 2024 and the final ship, Interasia Tactic (IMO: 1018171), was delivered by its Japanese shipbuilder in June.

Interasia’s latest newbuilding contract appears to be part of the total new orders for 18 containerships placed by undislosed shipowners, which was announced by YZJ in a stock exchange announcement on August 29.
