System outage at several container terminals worldwide shut down operations

Key ports Hamburg, Felixstowe, Rotterdam and Los Angeles are amongst those affected

Several container terminals reported systems issues impacting operations this morning, 19 July.

This follows the announcement of a global technical outage that grounded flights and impacted banks, supermarkets, news outlets, and stock exchanges worldwide.

According to news sources, cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike suffered a major outage on Friday, 19 July, after a global system update. The company announced it would roll back the update to restore services worldwide.

In addition, CNBC reports that Microsoft also suffered a cloud service outage on Friday, affecting its cloud apps in the U.S. It is not clear whether this outage was linked to CrowdStrike’s update, but it appears to have directly affected Windows systems globally.

Container terminals affected

The system outage caused APM Terminals Pier400 Los Angeles to close the remainder of the 2nd shift on 18 July. It later announced that it would be back online at 02:00 local time after implementing a system fix.

This morning, several European terminals, including Aarhus, Rotterdam, Gothenburg, Felixstowe, Liverpool, Hamburg, Bremerhaven, and Wilhelmshaven, reported systems issues.

Most terminals have suspended Gate-in/Gate-out operations to prioritise resolving the issue.
