Egypt's newly developed container terminal, named the Red Sea Container Terminals (RSCT), has commenced operations at Sokhna Port near the southern entrance to the Suez Canal.

The RSCT terminal is Egypt’s first semi‑automated container facility aimed at advancing the country’s container handling capacity and regional connectivity.

The project was developed by a consortium comprising Hutchison Ports, CMA Terminals, COSCO SHIPPING Ports and CMA CGM, supported by a 30‑year concession with the Egyptian government.

The terminal is located at Ain Sokhna, close to the Suez Canal, and set within the world’s deepest engineered port basin. RSCT’s Phase I provides a 1,200‑metre berth with 18‑metre water depth and an initial annual handling capacity of 1.7 million TEUs. Plans call for expansion to 3.5 million TEUs across 2.6 kilometres of quay.

Furthermore, the terminal features remotely operated ship‑to‑shore cranes and automated RTG cranes, with operations relying extensively on fully electric cargo‑handling equipment to support safer, more efficient and lower‑emission performance.

The basin depth reaches up to 19 metres, enabling the accommodation of all vessel sizes and container types.

RSCT is integrated with Egypt’s transport network, including direct highway and railway links to major industrial zones, thereby shortening transit times for imports, exports, and transhipment.

The terminal also offers direct access to major global shipping routes and close integration with nearby industrial and logistics zones.
