Small oil spill from boxship reported off Vancouver
Coast guard said pilot had reported pollution from a Danaos Corp-owned vessel on January 21
24 January 2023 (Lloyd's List) - AUTHORITIES in Canada have been working to contain a small “unrecoverable” oil spill from a boxship off Vancouver.
A Harbour Air pilot reported a spill of between 60-100 litres of fuel oil to the Canadian Coast Guard on January 21.
The source was identified as the 8,468 teu Europe, a Cyprus-flagged vessel that had been anchored at Vancouver’s English Bay after arriving from Prince Rupert several days earlier.
The coast guard said the shipowner initiated a response and contracted the Western Canada Marine Response Corp, which deployed a boom around the vessel.
“Two Shoreline Clean-up Assessment Teams walked the shorelines to search for any signs of fuel and none has been reported,” the coast guard said in its latest incident update on January 24. “Since the initial release on Saturday, there has been no further pollution.
“The precautionary boom around the vessel has now been removed. A National Aerial Surveillance Programme overflight has identified an unrecoverable patch of thin silver sheen in the middle of the Strait of Georgia.’’
The coast guard said no further releases from the ship have been detected.
The vessel, which is owned by Danaos Corp, is managed by Danaos Shipping and chartered by MSC, according to Lloyd’s List Intelligence data.
“Danaos Shipping Co immediately activated their emergency plan, notified all pertinent parties, and remain in close contact with the master and the authorities, assisting them in their investigation and spill response efforts,” the shipmanager said.
Government agency Transport Canada said in a statement it would conduct an examination of the vessel and its records.
Europe’s P&I club is Skuld, Lloyd’s List Intelligence data shows.
