Shanghai tops the world's ports for the thirteenth year

Shanghai International Port (Group) Co. handled a total of 47.3 million TEUs in 2022

China’s Port of Shanghai was the busiest in the world in 2022. The largest container port in the world retained this title for thirteen years in a row and continues to show signs of growth in the future. According to local news, Shanghai’s port operations survived the challenges of the country’s COVID-19 measures and the severe weather conditions it faced during the year. Chinese news portal CGTN reported that Shanghai International Port (Group) Co. handled a total of 47.3 million TEUs in 2022. The port’s business saw a V-shaped recovery in July after facing disruption in April, May and June. Later in September, Shanghai achieved record growth for daily container throughput. Other ports in China also faced multiple challenges throughout the year. The month of March was one of the toughest months for the port of Yantian in South China when a major virus outbreak occurred. Nevertheless, during January and November this year, Yantian port posted a container volume of 12.49m TEU, accounting for 46.5% of the total container throughput of Shenzhen port, reported Seatrade Maritime News. Ministry data reported that cargo throughput at China’s ports slightly increased by 0.7% during the first 11 months of 2022 year-on-year, and container throughput expanded by 4.2%. Recently, the country announced its plans to readjust import-export tariffs to boost trade, eventually reducing the overall tariff level from 7.4% to 7.3%. China is also relaxing its zero-COVID policy across states to facilitate the flow of goods in and out of ports.
