Shanghai Port manages ovearsees vessels to avoid delays amidst increased number of COVID cases

An update by Kuehne+Nagel confirms operations are normal while trucking continues to be affected by delays

The number of positive COVID-19 cases in West and East China is increasing. Nevertheless, the government continues to adjust its prevention methods to reduce limitations and boost the flow of goods to and from the country. New anti-COVID measures took effect in East China on 7 December, and more employees are returning to work at their offices. Furthermore, China's National Health Commission (NHC) announced on Monday that the management of the COVID situation will be downgraded from level A to B as of 8 January, reported local news. At the country's largest port, operators are taking measures to ensure the smooth flow of global trade through the port. According to a report by Bloomberg, Shanghai Port is keeping international vessels in a "closed-loop zone" in order to avoid delays. However, the port is generally operating in a timely manner without extended waiting times. Hapag-Lloyd recently reported that the average berth-waiting time is 0 to 0.5 days at Shanghai's terminals and overall yard utilization is approximately 70%. Port operations in West China are normal, while cargo transportation by truck continues to be impacted by the situation. In East China, all logistics activities including cargo consolidation, port operations and trucking are working normally, according to Kuehne+Nagel sources.
