Severe winds at Mundra Port cause MSC Alexandra to break free and strike construction jetty

Severe weather in Gujarat on 19 March led to significant disruption at Mundra Port, where strong winds and thunderstorms affected infrastructure and vessel operations.

Conditions resembled a storm from early morning, creating safety concerns across the facility.

Boxship MSC Alexandra, which was moored at the CT3 terminal, was affected by the intensity of the wind.

According to India Shipping News, the ship's mooring lines snapped, causing the ship to drift without control. During this drift, the vessel allided with a jetty that was under construction.

The port authority responded by halting vehicle access and instructing employees to relocate to safe areas.

Wind conditions also caused stacks of heavy cargo containers in the yard to overturn or be displaced. The strength of the gusts prompted immediate safety measures to restrict the movement of personnel throughout the port.

The impact of the weather extended beyond Mundra. Strong winds and rainfall were reported in Lakhpat, Abdasa, Bhuj, and Nakhatrana, where farmers experienced damage to crops.

Seaexplorer data shows that MSC Alexandra is a 14000-TEU Panamanian‑flagged container vessel deployed on the FE5SENTOSA and LION services.
