Roadblocks prevent container movement in and out of Guatemalan ports

Anti-government protestors claim they will not remove roadblocks until the government complies with their demands

Opposition activists and members of indigenous groups started a series of protests earlier this month in Guatemala to demand the government's resignation. In addition to demonstrations, the activists placed roadblocks blocking transport across the country.

Official authorities reported that the airport's access to fuel had been disrupted due to the roadblocks and suggested flights be diverted to neighbouring countries.

While ports are able to handle berthed vessels, Kuehne+Nagel sources revealed that access points to ports have been blocked. As a result, trucks transporting containers cannot enter or exit the ports of Santo Tomas de Castilla, Puerto Barrios and Puerto Quetzal.

At the Port of Santo Tomas de Castilla, yard capacity is 50%. If the roadblock continues, the port will likely reach its maximum capacity this week. Operations at the Puerto Barrios could halt sooner, as the yard capacity is already at 85%.

Container movement at the country's largest port, Puerto Quetzal, is currently at a standstill, while the 7-day average waiting time for vessels reached nearly 1.4 days.
