Rail workers strike this week in Spain and the UK

Six Spanish provinces, including Barcelona, will witness rail strikes on 19 and 21 July, while UK rail workers plan to stike on 20, 22 and 29 July

Rail workers in six Spanish provinces, including Barcelona and Malaga, will go on strike on 19 and 21 July, according to a report by Crisis24. The workers participating in the strikes are unionised rail workers employed by the National Network of Spanish Railways (Renfe) and the state-owned railway infrastructure manager ADIF. Cantabria, Ourense, Seville, and Valladolid will also witness strikes on these dates.

The Spanish rail workers will walk out to demand better work conditions and criticise employers’ outsourcing strategies and the deteriorating standards of the rail service.

Renfe is one of Spain’s leading rail transport operators that moves goods as well as passengers across the country. The company runs about 5,000 trains every day in Spain and employs nearly 15,000 workers.

During the strike, demonstrations are also expected to occur at transport hubs. Cargo movement is expected to witness disruptions during and after the strike concludes.

Similar labour action will take place this week in the United Kingdom. Unionised railway workers represented by the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF) and Rail, Maritime, and Transport (RMT) unions have announced separate industrial action across the country July 17-22, revealed Crisis24.

Members of RMT will go on strike on 20, 22, and 29 July, affecting the movement of trains operated by 22 rail companies. At the same time, ASLEF has announced an overtime ban for its members between 17 and 22 July and will join RMT’s strike on 29 July.
