Port of Salalah attacked and operations suspended

OPERATIONS at Salalah’s container terminals have been suspended after drones hit fuel tanks at the Omani port.

State-owned Oman News Agency said there were no casualties as a result of the strikes, but operator APM Terminals confirmed all operations had been “paused” until further notice.

“We can confirm an ongoing incident near to the general cargo terminal,” APMT said in a statement.

“The staff is following the established evacuation protocol, and the terminal is working with the authorities to manage the situation and keep all people safe.”

Vanguard Tech said it was unclear whether the fuel tanks were struck directly or by falling debris. Three explosions were heard in the vicinity, Vanguard said, which could have been interceptions.

There are signs that the strike is already causing vessel disruption.

China-flagged, 2,400-teu containership Hui Fa (IMO: 9714939) arrived at Salalah at 1152 hrs, before departing again swiftly afterwards at 1230 hrs.

There are reports that Iran also launched unsuccessful strikes on fellow Omani port of Duqm. The port is operating normally, Lloyd’s Agents in the region have confirmed.
