Panama Canal transit auction reaches record $5.3 million

An LPG carrier secured priority passage as unreserved vessels competed for fewer available slots, pushing the winning bid to almost 100 times the median auction price seen before February.

South Korea’s SK Gas has paid a record $5.3 million to secure a northbound Panama Canal transit slot for the LPG carrier G. Spirit on 1 September. The bid exceeded the previous record of $4.6 million set earlier in August and was nearly 100 times the median auction price of about $55,000 recorded before February.

Why did the price reach a record

The result reflects an acute imbalance between urgent demand and limited capacity. According to the Panama Canal Authority, the share of vessels arriving without a reservation has risen from around 10% to 20–25%. These ships must wait for an opening or compete in an auction for a slot, with reported waits of up to 11 days.

Competition has intensified sharply because geopolitical disruption and cargo economics have made a prompt canal passage unusually valuable. The Iran war has disrupted Middle East routes and shifted more energy movements towards the Americas–Asia corridor, increasing demand for Panama Canal access, particularly among LNG and LPG carriers.

This urgency has coincided with a growing number of vessels arriving without confirmed bookings. Their share has risen from around 10% to 20–25%, concentrating more ships in the last-minute market.

At the peak, we had 18 bidders for one slot, That's a lot. Normally you have two to three per day.

With only a small number of auction openings available, this combination of more bidders and a high cost of delay drove bids sharply higher.

At the same time, water availability is constraining supply. Rainfall in the canal watershed from May to August was 34% below the historical average, while water inflows were 44% lower.

The authority will therefore reduce daily capacity to 34 transits in early September and to 32 from mid-month, further increasing the value of a guaranteed passage.

How Panama Canal slot auctions work

Most vessels secure passage in advance through the canal’s Transit Reservation System. Longer-term access for Neopanamax vessels is also available through the Long-Term Slot Allocation programme, known as LoTSA, which assigns future capacity through sealed bids.

Daily auctions provide a separate route for vessels without a confirmed booking or those needing faster passage. The authority offers designated auction slots and can add capacity released through cancellations.

Eligible vessels submit competing bids, and the highest bidder secures the slot.

The auction charge is paid in addition to the regular canal toll.

From September, auction slots will be divided into four vessel groups. LNG and LPG carriers will compete in the first group, followed by dry bulk and general cargo vessels; container, vehicle and refrigerated ships; and chemical, crude and product tankers.

This structure is designed to reflect different market segments while allocating scarce water and transit capacity more efficiently.

Operational implications

The record bid shows how costly schedule certainty can become when vessels arrive without reservations during a capacity squeeze.

The canal authority stresses that a confirmed booking is the only mechanism that guarantees a transit date. With fewer passages available and strong competition continuing, unreserved vessels face a greater risk of extended waiting times, higher voyage costs and possible rerouting.
