Panama Canal launches preventive water release as Gatun Lake reaches peak levels

The Panama Canal Authority initiated a controlled water discharge from the Gatun Dam on 6 February after the reservoir rose to 88.93 feet, reaching its maximum operational level.

The release followed several days of heavy rainfall that kept inflows from tributary rivers unusually high. By 7 February, the lake measured 88.9 feet, remaining well above the five‑year average of 85.3 feet for the month.

According to the Panama Canal Authority (PCA), the action was taken because the reservoir had reached its operational limit while runoff remained elevated.

The objective is to safeguard the canal’s structures and reduce risks for communities situated both upstream and downstream of the Gatun complex.

Gatun Lake serves as the primary freshwater source for the canal’s lock system, and maintaining safe levels is essential for operations and regional flood control.

Officials indicated that the decision to open the floodgates was a preventive measure in response to sustained rainfall and increased inflows from surrounding rivers.

The high-water situation sharply contrasts with the severe drought that restricted canal activity through 2023 and 2024.

During that period, a strong El Niño led to reduced drafts, limited daily transits and prolonged operation below capacity.

Gatun Lake had previously fallen to 79.6 feet in August 2023 before gradually recovering, reaching 85 feet by August 2024.

With the transition to La Niña and increased rainfall, the canal has since returned to normal operating parameters, including approximately 36 daily transits and maximum drafts of 50 feet for Neopanamax vessels.

Current limits stand at 50 feet for Neopanamax ships and 39.5 feet for Panamax vessels.
