No risk to shipping after US shoots down missiles over Red Sea

The UK Maritime Trade Operations body has issued an advisory warning vessels to exercise caution, but there is no evidence that commercial maritime trade will be targeted or affected

20 October 2023 (Lloyd's List) - THERE is no increased risk to commercial shipping in the Red Sea after a US-guided missile destroyer shot down three missiles and several drones launched from Yemen that were heading north along the water.

USS Carney shot down three land attack cruise missiles and several drones that were launched by Houthi forces, according to US officials.

It is possible that Israel was the target and the attack might be ongoing, Pentagon press secretary Patrick Ryder told a US defence department briefing.

UK Maritime Trade Operations issued a threat advisory yesterday lasting until October 22, but indicated that commercial maritime ships are not at increased risk.

“UKMTO are aware of heightened uncrewed aerial system activity heading north out of Yemen. There are currently no indications commercial maritime vessels are the intended target,” it said.

Security analysts urged caution for ships, but said the risk was unchanged.

EOS Risk Group head of advisory Martin Kelly said: “At the moment, there is no increased threat to shipping in the area. This is very much Israel-centric.”
