New 50% tariffs on steel and aluminium imports to the US effective today

New 50% tariffs on steel and aluminium imports to the US effective today

The new tariffs expand to include previously exempt derivatives, and reciprocal tariffs on non-steel and non-aluminium components

The U.S. Government's increase in tariffs on certain steel and aluminium articles and their derivatives from 25% to 50% takes effect today. For steel, aluminium, and their derivative products, the increased 50% Section 232 tariff applies to the steel or aluminium content, while any applicable reciprocal tariff applies to the remaining content.

This policy change aims to curb the import of low-priced, excess capacity steel and aluminium that the administration believes threaten U.S. industry competitiveness and national security.

The updated tariffs apply to imports from all countries, except for goods from the United Kingdom, which will remain at the original 25% rate under the U.S.-UK Economic Prosperity Deal. This exception is contingent on the UK's adherence to the agreement's terms.

All entries into U.S. Foreign Trade Zones (FTZs) involving covered steel and aluminium must be admitted under privileged foreign status from the effective date.

According to the announcement, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will enforce strict compliance with declaration and content reporting requirements, with potential severe penalties for non-compliance.
