30 August 2024 (Lloyd's List) - A CONTAINERSHIP has struck a tall ship and damaged a museum in the Australian port of Fremantle, Australia.

The Maersk-owned, 2010-built, 8,411 teu Maersk Shekou (IMO: 9466984) was approaching Fremantle from Adelaide accompanied by four tugs and with two pilots on board.

The vessel collided with STS Leeuwin II, a 1986-built tall ship used for youth training exercises on the Western Australian coastline, at 0615 hrs on August 30.

Fremantle Ports said the bow of Maersk Shekou struck Leeuwin, dismasting the tall ship. The hull did not appear to have been breached, the port operator said.

The stern of the boxship caused damage to a berth at the port as well as the Western Australia Maritime Museum’s roof.

The cause of the incident is unknown and a full investigation by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and Fremantle Ports investigation will be launched.
