A consortium of tech companies recently launched an initiative for advanced smart container technology.
The Smart Container Alliance initiative, launched in February, aims to improve cargo traceability, strengthen maritime trade, and assist global enforcement agencies in combating criminal networks.
Among the founding members are industry leaders ORBCOMM, Traxens, Nexxiot, Hoopo, Globe Tracker, and Arviem.
According to a press release, the Alliance was established to address the growing challenges of illicit trade and supply chain security, particularly in the face of geopolitical instability and climate disruptions.
By integrating smart technology solutions, tech companies seek to advance industry standards, advocate for policy changes, and foster stakeholder collaboration.
These include technology providers, shipowners, customs authorities, and international regulatory bodies like the EU and the World Customs Organization (WCO).
Furthermore, the new initiative is expected to improve customs efficiency and promote best practices through increased investment in customs operations, digital transformation, and stronger public-private partnerships.
Coinciding with significant EU Customs Union reforms, the initiative positions smart containers at the forefront of a data-driven approach to customs checks.
While the technology is available currently by some ocean carriers, it is yet to become the norm globally.
Like other technologies emerging in the market, smart containers are set to play a crucial role in the shift towards a data-driven approach for ocean shipping, reinforcing monitoring and security measures across ports.
