India Coast Guard says major fire on Maersk Frankfurt ‘doused’

Newbuilding boxship caught fire on July 19, with one death confirmed

24 July (Lloyd's List) - THE major fire, which broke out on the Panama-flagged containership Maersk Frankfurt (IMO: 9969065) off the coast of India’s Karnataka on July 19, has been successfully extinguished, according to the India Coast Guard, which is attending the vessel.


The ICG has been making firefight efforts in extreme monsoon conditions, it said in a post on X, noting it is maintaining a presence to combat any reignition and is closely monitoring the situation.


The ICG is also engaged in preventing marine pollution from the vessel’s 1,154 containers, including dangerous cargo such as benzene and sodium cyanate.


A specialised pollution control vessel, Samudra Prahari (IMO: 9341213), has been deployed to the scene since Saturday to offer additional assistance.


Both Maersk and the Panama Maritime Authority have confirmed the death of a crew member while the rest of the crew is safe and accounted for.


The ICG stated over the weekend that the forecastle area had been compromised by melting containers, and the starboard side was also ablaze.


The 5,500 teu containership, chartered by Maersk, caught fire last Friday while sailing in the Arabian Sea off the Indian coast.


The 2024-built vessel is managed by Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, and beneficially owned by Japan-based Tokei Kaiun, according to Lloyd’s List Intelligence data.
