French trade unions have announced a nationwide mobilisation on 5 November, encouraging employees from both the private and public sectors, together with students and pensioners, to participate in strikes and street demonstrations.
The initiative has been launched by a coalition of five unions: CFDT, CGT, FO, Unsa and FSU. The organisations stated that the planned action will centre on pay, public services, jobs and industrial policy.
The planned protest follows criticism of the government's draft 2027 budget. Unions are seeking improvements to pay and pensions, a higher civil service index point, increases to the minimum wage and enhanced social support payments.
Of the five unions involved, CGT, CFDT and FO are the ones most commonly associated with maritime and port-related labour because they represent workers across a wide range of transport and industrial sectors.
The full scope of the planned action has yet to be confirmed. However, the unions' previous strike calls have been described as having the potential to cause widespread disruption to transport and public services.
