14 August 2023 (Lloyd's List) - A FIRE, which broke out aboard the 2,800 teu capacity KMTC Shenzhen (IMO: 9626417) off Port Klang, Malaysia on August 12, has been put out by firefighters.
The blaze is believed to have started within two containers loaded with resin and general goods, which were stowed in the forward section of the 2013-built vessel as it was on approach to the port, at around midday local time, according to Lloyd’s List Intelligence data.
The vessel was on arrival from Hong Kong and was operating on South Korean liner operator Korea Marine Transport’s intra-Asia network at the time of the incident.
Local tugs, including Maju Tenang (IMO: 9908152) and the firefighting-equipped Super Tenang (IMO: 9874753), together with the buoy-servicing vessel Polaris (IMO: 9810599) were dispatched from Port Klang with local firefighters to the burning vessel to assist with extinguishing operations.
The fire is understood to have been extinguished two hours after rescue teams reached the ship, in the early hours of August 13.
KMTC Shenzen remains anchored off the port as of today, August 14, while a team from Malaysia’s marine department together with the fire and rescue department have launched an investigation.
The 10-year-old vessel is classed by Korean Register and insured by Britannia.
