Fire incident briefly shuts down Antwerp Port terminals over the weekend

The fire brigade managed to contain the fire on 23 June, which was reportedly caused by a container with yellow phosphorus

A fire incident at the Port of Antwerp, Belgium, caused the shutdown of its terminals as a precautionary measure on Sunday, 23 June. Docked vessels were also evacuated to avoid major losses in case the fire spread.

According to information, a container caught fire on Sunday at the MSC PSA Terminal (MPET), run by the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) and used by MSC ships.

The fire brigade was notified of the fire at approximately 19:30 local time, and the terminal had to be evacuated.

In addition, maritime traffic was suspended at Deurganckdok.

Luckily, the fire was contained, and the authorities managed to control it on the same day.

News reports claim that the box contained yellow phosphorus, which is considered a volatile substance that burns when exposed to air.

The latest report by the authorities reveals that the container had been moved to a secure place, and efforts are being made to swiftly recommence port operations.
