Domestic unrest in Pakistan could affect cargo movement

Protests and road blockages are expected in the country after the arrest of opposition leader

Leader of Pakistan's opposition party and former prime minister, Imran Khan, was arrested yesterday against charges of corruption, sparking unrest in the capital, Islamabad. Kuehne+Nagel expects the political unrest in the country to include protests, road blockages and rallies that could turn violent in some areas.

Cargo moving through the highway network is likely to be affected due to the expected disruptions, including "the non-availability of empty equipment inventory at ICDs locations," advises Kuehne+Nagel. In addition, attendance at offices is likely to be limited, while banks are expected to remain open for now.

"Ports are also functional and no logistics disruptions have been reported over the road within the port city Karachi so far," says Amir Jaleel, Kuehne+Nagel's National Sea Logistics Manager based in Pakistan.
