Container vessel Stratford catches fire in South China Sea

Chinese rescue authorities successfully extinguished a fire on the Stratford in a four-day rescue operation

The 8,553-TEU container vessel Stratford experienced a severe fire on Monday, 28 July, in the South China Sea.

 

The vessel, which was under charter to OOCL on its China–India Express 3 (CIX3) service, had 25 foreign crew members on board.

 

According to Chinese media Xine Marine News, rescue operations were initiated promptly, but efforts took nearly four days. No crew members were injured in the incident.

 

Eventually, the fire was completely extinguished on 1 August.

 

Seaexplorer data shows that the containership remains afloat off the coast of Vietnam.
