Chevron delivers first biofuel bunker to Ocean Network Express
992.2 tonnes of VLSFO-B24 was supplied to ONE’s container vessel MOL Endowment
29 December 2022 (Lloyd's List) - CHEVRON has delivered its inaugural biofuel bunker sales to Ocean Network Express.
The transaction saw the transfer of 992.2 tonnes of VLSFO-B24 biofuel to ONE’s container vessel, the 62,949-dwt MOL Endowment (IMO: 9333852) in Singapore, according to a social media post.
ONE in February last year earmarked biofuels as a viable decarbonisation pathway after a successful trial on its vessel MOL Experience (IMO: 9333838). The vessel completed the trial voyage from Rotterdam to US on February 7, 2021, running on biofuels that offer 80%-90% reduction in well-to-exhaust carbon dioxide emissions.
“The success of the trial proves the viability of sustainable biofuels which will help ONE to meet its carbon reduction targets in 2030 and 2050 respectively,” ONE said then. It has committed to reducing its fleet’s CO2 emissions in terms of grammes per teu-kilometre by 25% by 2030 and by 50% by 2050 compared with its 2018 baseline.
The biofuel used by the vessel was made from waste oils such as used cooking oil, supplied by Dutch supplierGoodFuels.
Separately Chevron in June secured a contract to supply 500 tonnes of biofuel for ONE’s parent company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines. The biofuel was bunkered on MOL’s panamax bulk carrier C.S. Olive (IMO: 9461075) for sea trials.
