Wildfires in Northern Ontario continue to disrupt rail services across Canada

Wildfires in Northern Ontario are continuing to affect rail operations, with disruptions impacting freight and passenger services across parts of Canada.

Maritime Ontario reports that rail traffic between Sioux Lookout and Armstrong has been interrupted due to a wildfire in the region. The disruption is affecting intermodal train movements between Brampton and terminals throughout Western Canada.

It adds that access restrictions remain in place, while some affected areas are either closed or subject to evacuation orders as a precaution.

Local news mentioned the impact on the Canadian National Railway’s freight network. Its mainline north of Lake Superior has been closed since Monday, and transcontinental freight trains are being rerouted.

Meanwhile, Canadian Pacific Kansas City reported that its operations have not been affected by wildfires in Ontario or British Columbia.

No impact is yet reported on port operations in the region.

Passenger rail services have also been impacted. Via Rail has cancelled services between Toronto and Winnipeg until 19 July and is repositioning trains to maintain operations between Winnipeg and Vancouver.
