UAE, DNV partner to open first maritime decarbonisation centre in the Middle East

The centre seeks to boost shipping decarbonisation efforts in the MENA region and worldwide

The UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure has joined forces with DNV, a leading classification society recognized for its activity in the maritime industry, and signed a Memorandum of Understanding for establishing the UAE Maritime Decarbonization Centre. This initiative aims to foster global collaboration among stakeholders from the sector and beyond, with the primary goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.

This decision comes in the wake of the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) revised strategy, as member states collectively strive to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

According to a press release by DNV, the UAE Maritime Decarbonization Centre will adopt a multifaceted approach, focusing on several key aspects.

Firstly, it will lead joint industry research programmes, leveraging the expertise of diverse partners to drive innovation and sustainable practices. Additionally, the centre will engage governmental, industry, and academic stakeholders in collaborative efforts to tackle maritime emissions.

The centre will be the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region, and it will seek to attract new talent to the industry. The partners anticipate launching the UAE Maritime Decarbonization Centre in early 2024.
