Shipping rides cyber storm with minimal disruption

A few ports and lines experienced small amounts of disruption

July 19 (Lloyd's List) - THE IT problems that have plagued industries around the world did not extend to shipping, with some ports and companies reporting minor disruption on Friday, July 19.

A defect in a software update launched by cybersecurity company Crowdstrike left flights cancelled, disrupted doctor’s surgeries and stopped some shops taking payment.

Yet shipping escaped major disruption.

A spokesperson for the Port of Felixstowe said the port was affected by the outage in the early hours of Friday morning, but that haulage operations resumed shortly afterwards and it was “working up to full capacity” as soon as possible.

Gdansk’s Baltic Hub container terminal had alerted customers to disruption at the terminal, but again the issue was resolved shortly afterwards.

Container line and terminal operator AP Moller-Maersk said issues “briefly affected some of our operated terminals, but all were back in operation within a few hours”.
