Kenya's state-owned railway operator suspended rail transport to the Port of Mombasa on 18 November due to severe floods.
Heavy rainfall in several towns across East Africa led to major flooding and landslides, leaving hundreds of people homeless, reports Reuters.
Rail cargo services were closed after the railway line between Nairobi and Mombasa was submerged in flood water.
According to Reuters, the railway also moves cargo to other countries in the region, including Rwanda, Uganda and South Sudan.
The extreme weather conditions are attributed to the El Nino phenomenon and come after prolonged periods of drought in the region.
The bordering country, Somalia, reported dozens of casualties due to the floods, as the death toll in both Kenya and Somalia exceeded 80.
