The port of Saint John recently finalised a decade-long modernisation programme valued at C$247 million.
The project, completed in December 2025, helped reshape the port’s container operations through extensive construction in both land and marine areas.
The upgraded facility, operated by DP World, now includes an enlarged berth, a deeper and wider navigation channel, and a significantly extended yard and laydown zone. Intermodal infrastructure has also been enhanced.
The port reports that the project attracted commitments from partners, including DP World, CPKC, CN and NB Southern Railway, over the past decade.
Investments from the partners combined have supported new equipment and rail improvements, contributing to a sharp rise in throughput during 2025.
Neighbouring Montreal expansion project expected 2030
Another project is expected to be completed in 2030 at the Port of Montreal, involving the expansion of port facilities at the Contrecœur container terminal and the construction of a new one.
The new container terminal will be able to handle 1.15 million TEU by 2030, when it is expected to be fully operational.
According to the port, the terminal will generate over 10,000 jobs annually at its full capacity, and it will include two berths and a large container handling area.
In addition, the project will construct an intermodal rail yard connected to the main network and a truck gate connected to the road network.
