The Panama Canal Authority has unveiled a new initiative to promote sustainability among ships.

Starting on 5 October 2025, the canal will introduce the "Netzero Slot," a weekly transit slot reserved for vessels with low carbon emissions.

According to the authority's announcement, this initiative is part of the canal's efforts to support and reward clients on their journey towards decarbonisation.

Ships approved under the Netzero initiative will be able to select their transit day within the offered week and will be guaranteed 24-hour in-transit time.

To qualify for the slot, vessels must meet specific low-carbon requirements that will be adjusted according to the industry's sustainability goals.

Unlike regular crossings, which are allocated through auctions, the Netzero Slot will be awarded via a competition held 30 days before the designated "green" crossing.
