India targets fourfold expansion of port capacity by 2047

According to a report by the Economic Times, India plans to quadruple its port and terminal capacity over the next two decades.

This comes as the country works to strengthen maritime infrastructure and support expanding trade and economic growth as part of its maritime strategy through 2047.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal outlined the ambition during a visit to Rotterdam. He said India’s growing economy and international trade would require significant investment in modern ports and shipping connections.

The Sagarmala initiative is also focused on improving the country’s maritime infrastructure and connectivity, while opportunities for cooperation with the Port of Rotterdam include sustainable development.

Major shipping companies have already shown interest in India’s plans.

APM Terminals is among the businesses that have invested or expressed interest, while Maersk has been working to reinforce its presence in the Indian market.

The carrier previously identified potential investment of around USD 5 billion across Indian ports, terminals and land infrastructure.

Additionally, the media reports that India intends to establish a major maritime education institution in Mumbai.

The facility will focus on developing skilled seafarers as the country pursues its wider maritime ambitions.
