On 13 September, the National Hurricane Centre of the United States warned that Hurricane Lee could bring tropical storm conditions, heavy rainfall and high surf to areas on the East Coast. However, the hurricane turned northward in the late hours of yesterday and is now expected to make landfall on the Eastern Coast of Canada.
The latest update by the centre reported, “A dangerous storm surge could produce coastal flooding within the wind watch areas in Atlantic Canada in areas of onshore winds. Near the coast, the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves.”
Maritime operations could be impacted as early as Friday evening for portions of New England and the Canadian Atlantic coast, namely the ports of Halifax and Saint John. Canada’s Port of Halifax issued an alert by which it advised that “due to adverse weather conditions forecast for September 15-17, 2023, pilot and terminal operations may be affected throughout this period.”
