South Korea's liner HMM announced today that it managed to reduce its carbon emissions to "less than half of 2010 levels." In a press release issued on 12 April, HMM highlighted that it had accelerated its efforts in the past 10 years to become an eco-friendly shipping company and managed to cut its emissions by 57.7%.

The company noted that "CO2 emissions generated when transporting 1 TEU of container for 1km decreased from 68.7g in 2010 to 29.05g in 2021." The measures taken to achieve this milestone included fleet renewal, antifouling paint and modification of the bulbous bow’s shape, according to the carrier. In addition, the company was able to improve operational efficiency by means of optimizing service routes, speeds, and cargo stowage.

Furthermore, the press release added, "This result has been achieved amid a more than two-fold increase in fleet capacity, from 337,407 TEU to 755,209 TEU, in the same period."

For the future, the carrier said it is committed to reach net-zero emissions across its entire fleet by 2050. “We will continue to engage in activities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions based on data-driven analysis and enhance our environmental capability,” said an HMM official.

The company's most recent investment in this field was the signing of contracts for the construction of nine 9,000 TEU methanol-fueled containerships.
